Wilma Ligthart started her career in the theatre, where she appeared with the internationally wellknown Dogtroep. This experience shines through in her work as a filmmaker. She created for the VPRO ( Dutch Broadcast station) various drama-productions. She filled the parts of director, scenarist en also played the leading role.

Wilma finished the Media Academy in Hilversum, specialisations; documentary, directing and interview. She was invited by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) to make a documentary about the airplane disaster in Amsterdam (1992) titled ‘ When the plane crashed ’. A slew of documentaries followed. Several of them were awarded.

Wilma Ligthart's films are shown on Dutch TV, at International Filmfestivals, and at the IDFA on a regular base. Her preferences are taboo subjects, where people do recognise themselves but would rather not speak out. Some of her subjects were: ageing as a teen, obesity, lovers pain, trauma processing and ‘ the first time ’.
